What is service learning? Service-learning is a way of learning new information by combining classroom academics with a community service project. The principles of service-learning are: (1) student engagement in choosing and planning project, (2) students and teachers identify learning goals of project, (3) project is meaningful and makes a difference and (4) students participate in project reflection and evaluation.

Mission Statement of the Student Activists for Service Learning: SASL’s mission is to engage New Haven teachers in developing service-learning projects in order to expose students to learning through the service-learning process.

SASL Goals: SASL members will learn the principles of excellent service-learning and practice those principles as part of all of the Youth Board’s activities. Encourage teachers to develop service-learning projects in their classrooms. Develop administrative procedures for managing the Board’s functions. Participate in training and networking activities for service learning via conferences and advanced leadership opportunities.

Leadership Opportunity: Youth who want an opportunity to develop leadership skills and complete a meaningful community service should consider becoming a SASL member. The tasks of the Board are to recruit proposals from teachers for possible funding; rank proposals in order of importance; provide a mini-grant to the winning classes; visit the grant site over the course of the project and receive the final report and evaluation of the project from the project site. This is a service activity and qualifies for community service hours for graduation requirements.

Requirements of membership: SASL members are required to attend meetings regularly. A certificate of participation will be awarded yearly to every student with a 90% attendance rate. Members must also have a recommendation from an adult sponsor (other than a parent) and be willing to complete up to 4 hours of work (per month) outside of the regular meeting time. SASL members are required to arrange for their own transportation (mileage and bus costs can be refunded). Meetings are held every other Thursday at Common Ground High School from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
